British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
