In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
