We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The narrative commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.
Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
